Teen Avoids Jail for Terrorism Offences in Birmingham
A 16-year-old from Bartley Green has been handed a 12-month Referral Order for terrorism offences at Birmingham Youth Court today (21 May). The teenager, nameless due to his age, admitted to possessing documents used to prepare or commit an act of terrorism between May and June 2020.
Arrest and Court Details
The youth was arrested in June 2020 after police executed a warrant at his home. At Westminster Magistrates Court in March, he pled guilty to three counts related to terrorism. Despite the serious nature of the crimes, the judge opted for rehabilitation over custody, citing concerns that jail would do more harm than good.
Strict Conditions and Warnings
The Referral Order includes an intensive rehab contract. His parents also received a 12-month order linked to the case. The judge warned that any breach of the order would lead to immediate custody for the teenager.
