Lorry Driver Caught on Camera: 42 Dangerous Driving Offences Before Crash

A shocking video reveals a lorry driver distracted by his mobile phone smashing into the back of a van on the A27, seriously injuring three people. The crash happened near Lewes at 10.55am on 10 August 2020.

Persistent Distraction: Phone, Food, and No Seatbelt

The footage, captured by two cameras on Derek Holland’s lorry, exposed 42 separate incidents of reckless driving during his four-hour journey. The 59-year-old from Seaford was repeatedly using his phone, peeling a banana, and even waving while driving – all without wearing a proper seatbelt.

  • Holland used a fake seatbelt buckle to silence alarms.
  • He only clicked on the real seatbelt when behind a police car, removing it as soon as out of sight.
  • The crash involved a broken-down security van carrying a driver, prison escort, and prisoner – all injured.

“Atrocious” Driving Gets Jail Time

Holland pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. At Hove Crown Court, he was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison, banned from driving for 57 months, and will need an extended retest to regain his licence.

Judge Rennie said: “You showed no consideration for public safety or the law. There was nobody else to blame for this collision but you.”

Holland admitted his behaviour was “atrocious” and showed “clear remorse” during court proceedings.

Police Warn: Distracted Driving Is Deadly

Detective Sergeant Rob Baldwin said the lorry firm’s cameras were crucial in exposing Holland’s dangerous actions. He slammed the driver’s “complete disregard” for other road users.

“This is the worst case of prolonged distracted driving I have seen,” said DS Baldwin. “Even if a device isn’t held in your hand, distractions can lead to devastating crashes and serious charges.”

Drivers are urged to keep hands on the wheel and eyes on the road – or face severe consequences.
