Man Who Jumped From Chelsea Bridge After Tasering Was Carrying Firelighter, Not Screwdriver
A man who died after apparently jumping from Chelsea Bridge following a police Taser shock was carrying a firelighter — not a screwdriver, as first reported.
Oladeji Adeyemi Omishore, 41, was confronted by officers on June 4 in West London. Police initially claimed he had a screwdriver, but the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) revealed he was actually holding a plastic and metal firelighter.
Taser Shock and Fatal Leap Into Thames
Video circulating on social media shows Mr Omishore being Tasered by officers. He then ran to the edge of Chelsea Bridge and jumped over the barrier into the River Thames.
The IOPC confirmed the Taser was fired multiple times before he entered the river. His identity was officially confirmed by the watchdog, who also opened an inquest into his death on June 15, which has since been adjourned.
Investigation Continues, Witnesses Urged to Come Forward
“Our hearts go out to Mr Omishore’s family and everyone affected by his death,” said Sal Naseem, regional director of the IOPC. “We are still in contact with his family and updating them on the investigation.”
“Investigators are analysing video footage and gathering witnesses’ accounts. Anyone who saw any part of the incident on the bridge or after he entered the river should get in touch immediately.”
A post-mortem was carried out on June 13, and the IOPC is awaiting the pathologist’s report to confirm the cause of death.
