Brutal Attack in Culver Street West Leaves Man Scarred for Life

In the early hours of 24 July last year, Jordan Pope, 25, launched a savage assault on a man in his 20s on Culver Street West, just before 2am. Pope, out with friends, punched the victim to the ground and stamped on his head as he tried to get up. The vicious attack left the victim lying unconscious in the road, seriously injured.

Victim Suffers Serious Injuries and Lasting Trauma

The victim’s brother, who was there at the time, was also attacked by others in Pope’s group and witnessed the horrifying aftermath. The man sustained serious head injuries, eventually making a recovery but left with large scars and permanent hearing loss in one ear. Both brothers continue to suffer from the trauma caused that night.

Pope Caught and Jailed for Brutal Assault

The group fled the scene but were caught on CCTV. Pope was arrested and charged with GBH with intent and assault. On 16 February 2023, he pleaded guilty at Ipswich Crown Court. Yesterday, 26 April, he was sentenced to five years and two months in prison, with orders to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and a 12-month suspension. He will serve two-thirds of his sentence behind bars.

Her Honour Judge Emma Peters called the attack “vicious,” warning the victim is likely to endure lifelong effects from what she described as “serious and almost catastrophic injuries.”

Police Praise Victim’s Family and Public for Bravery

Detective Constable Hannah Richardson of colchester/" title="Colchester" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Colchester CID led the investigation. She condemned Pope as a “dangerous individual” whose actions could have ended a life. She praised the victim’s family for their bravery and thanked door staff and members of the public who stepped in to prevent further violence and helped secure rapid medical aid.

“Without their help and quick actions our family could have been ripped apart. They kept our family together as a unit and for that we will be forever grateful,” the victim’s family said. “Thankfully both our sons are recovering well and receiving the support they require to continue their recovery.”
