Morocco court slaps 20-year sentence on man in shocking child rape case
Hefty jail terms handed down after public outrage
The Rabat appeals court has dealt heavier sentences in a brutal child rape case. One man got 20 years behind bars, while his two accomplices received 10 years each. This is a steep rise from their original punishments – 2 years for one and 18 months each for the other two.
The court also ordered the trio to pay 140,000 dirhams in damages to the victim.
Nation enraged over initial leniency
The case sparked nationwide fury after the initial light sentences were handed down. Tens of thousands signed a petition demanding tougher punishment for the offenders.
The victim, only 12 years old, was reportedly raped repeatedly over several months, according to the Jossour Forum of Moroccan Women. The horrific crime has shone a harsh spotlight on women’s rights and child protection issues in Morocco.
Victim’s lawyers hail justice, but call for tougher sentences
Representatives for the victim welcomed the stronger sentences. However, they voiced concern that the two 10-year sentences fell far short of the maximum 30 years allowed under Moroccan law.
Charges, DNA evidence, and courtroom drama
All three accused were charged with “misappropriation of a minor” and “indecent assault on a minor with violence.” Prosecutors wanted “rape” added to the charges, but the judge rejected this. During the trial, one man was confronted with DNA proof confirming he fathered the victim’s child. Reports say the accused hung their heads as damning evidence was laid bare in court.
