Three Nabbed in South London Romance Fraud Sting
Police have arrested three suspects today as part of a major crackdown on ruthless romance fraudsters. This swoop brings the total number of arrests in the ongoing investigation to ten.
Raids Hit Two South London Homes
The latest arrests targeted two addresses in South London. A 35-year-old man, a 41-year-old woman, and a 47-year-old man face charges of fraud by false representation and money laundering.
Detective Constable Mason warned, “Romance fraud is a particularly cunning, cruel and highly manipulative crime. The impact this leaves on victims can be devastating.” He urged victims to speak out: “I hope this action today encourages victims of online romance fraud to come forward and report it so those responsible can be brought to justice.”
Romance Fraud Surges Amid Pandemic Loneliness
The pandemic’s isolation has fuelled a 33% spike in romance fraud cases since 2019. This year alone, Surrey and Sussex Police have logged 186 reports.
How to Shield Yourself from Romance Scams
- Limit personal info online – avoid sharing full name, birthdate, or address to prevent identity theft.
- Never send money or bank details to someone you’ve only met online, no matter how convincing their story.
- Stick to trusted dating sites and use their official messaging platforms. Fraudsters push to social or text to erase evidence.
- Always question if the person is who they claim. Don’t feel guilty being suspicious – real people understand caution.
- If you suspect a scam, contact your bank immediately. Report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or online at their website.
