A brutal stabbing has rocked the Bexley community. Leila Young, 33, was found with fatal wounds to her head and neck on Penhill Road just after 4pm on January 16. Despite rushing her to hospital, medics fought desperately to save her life.
Man Arrested and Charged
Tony Curant, 33, a neighbour from Penhill Road, was detained on January 20, days before Leila’s death. Originally charged with attempted murder, his charges will now be upgraded following Leila’s passing on the evening of January 23.
Appearing via video link from HMP Thameside in the Old Bailey on February 5, Curant confirmed his identity. Prosecutor William Emlyn Jones KC revealed the tragic news to the court and said charges will be amended to reflect the fatal outcome. A trial has been set for December 2024, with Curant to enter pleas in April.

Penhill Road has been draped in an outpouring of grief. Candles, flowers, and heartfelt notes now mark the spot where Leila was found. One message read: “So heartbreaking. I am so sorry this has happened to you. Sleep tight and may you rest in peace.”
Another tribute lovingly recalled Leila as a devoted mum: “Leila, you will always be remembered for the loving, brilliant mum you are. We will never forget you.”
