Trans Woman Faces Sex Assault Charges After Hiding Gender on Snapchat
A 21-year-old trans woman is on trial accused of sexually assaulting a man after allegedly concealing her gender identity during a Snapchat hookup.
Crucial Snapchat Messages Reveal ‘Secret’
Ciara Watkin, from Thornaby, Teesside, is charged with two counts of sexual assault and one of sexual assault by penetration. She denies all allegations.
Prosecutor Paul Reid told the court how Watkin and the complainant swapped messages on Snapchat before spending the night together. Watkin reportedly performed sexual acts but refused to let the man touch her, claiming she was on her period.
After the encounter, Watkin allegedly confessed to a “massive secret.” When the man asked if she was pregnant, Watkin said: “I’m trans. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.”
The man responded in shock: “WTF. So you have a d**k? OMFG. I feel ill.” He then reported her to the police, the court heard.
Jury Told ‘He Would Not Have Consented’
“The defendant had concealed from the man that she had a penis during their brief relationship. The man told police: ‘If I had known Watkin was transgender, I would not have consented. I don’t swing that way,’” said Mr Reid.
The court heard Watkin’s Snapchat profile showed a female cartoon avatar. No discussion about gender or sexuality took place before their meeting.
Watkin’s Police Interview and Denial
When arrested, Watkin allegedly admitted: “Me and him had sex without me telling him I was a boy. When I let him know I was a different gender, he didn’t like it.”
She admitted sexual activity occurred but denies any wrongdoing. The trial is ongoing.
