Truck Driver Jailed for Killing Teen in Shocking Blackheath Crash

A 14-year-old boy tragically lost his life, and his aunt was left seriously injured after a horrific crash in Blackheath involving a truck veering onto the pavement.

The Fatal Moment at the Bus Stop

Logan Finch was waiting for the 321 bus on 1 Road with his aunt and cousins on December 21, 2021. Suddenly, 43-year-old truck driver Frederick Mansfield swerved onto the pavement, pinning Logan between the truck and the bus stop. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but Logan was pronounced dead instantly. His aunt, Rachel Poole, suffered serious injuries.

Seven Years Behind Bars for Mansfield

Mansfield faced Woolwich Crown Court on February 22, charged with causing death by dangerous driving. The court sentenced him to seven years in prison and banned him from driving for six and a half years.

Denied Sleep Condition Defence — Family Furious

During the trial, Mansfield claimed an undiagnosed sleep condition made him drift off seconds before the crash. But Logan’s mother, Natalie Roach, condemned the trucker’s not guilty plea, saying Mansfield forced the family through a painful trial.

“Logan was a bright, energetic, and caring young man who was loved by all who knew him,” Roach said in a heartfelt impact statement. “This tragedy has left a void in our lives that nothing can fill.”

Evidence Exposed Dangerous Driving

The court heard Logan and his family were on their way for a haircut in Eltham when Mansfield’s truck struck a lamp post before crashing into the bus stop. Bodycam footage revealed Mansfield admitting he’d pressed the wrong pedal. Later, he shifted his story to say he blacked out or fell asleep behind the wheel.

Judge Jonathan Mann KC stressed the heavy responsibility truck drivers have on the road, highlighting Mansfield’s failure to stay alert.
