The Trump administration is cracking down hard on Somali immigrant sponsors over a massive welfare scam that ripped off billions from taxpayers. Health and Human Services Deputy Secretary Jim O’Neill has sent at least ten no-nonsense warning letters demanding repayment after uncovering a stunning fraud scheme in taxpayer-funded benefits.
Billions Lost in Feeding Our Future Fraud Scandal
The scandal involves 78 charged suspects tied to the infamous Feeding Our Future scandal, which swindled $453 million from federal child nutrition funds by claiming payment for meals that never existed. That’s not all—another $248 million disappeared through fake Medicaid housing claims targeting migrant families.
Even more jaw-dropping: $700 million in Medicaid payouts surged after thousands of children, mostly Somali, were falsely diagnosed with autism. Parents allegedly pocketed kickbacks while shady clinics recruited kids for fake diagnoses to rake in the cash.
Trump Blasts Minnesota as Fraud Hotspot
President Trump slammed Minnesota as a “hub of fraudulent money laundering activity” and demanded such criminals be ousted from the Somali community. He recently ended Temporary Protected Status for Somali immigrants, harshly declaring: “Their country stinks, and we don’t want them in our country.”
Meanwhile, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar faces fire after being pictured with Abdul Dahir Ibrahim, one of the suspects now in ICE custody. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is also under pressure for allegedly turning a blind eye to the scandal for political reasons.
How the Scam Worked
- Fake paperwork claimed funds for meal sites that didn’t exist
- False meal counts and fake employees were created to boost claims
- Stolen cash spent on luxury cars, property, and exotic travel
- Medical providers faked autism diagnoses to milk Medicaid payouts
- Parents received bribes to enrol children in bogus programmes
- Fake Medicaid housing claims drained funds meant for migrants
Federal Officials Demand Accountability
O’Neill’s letters warn that immigrant sponsors promised to support newcomers financially and keep them off public welfare. Now, sponsors face stiff demands to repay stolen funds or risk criminal charges. The Trump administration is zeroing in on recovering stolen taxpayer money—and ready to go to court if necessary.
