US Slams Visa Ban on Five European Anti-Hate Activists

Washington dropped a bombshell on Europe Tuesday by banning visas for five key European activists tackling online hate and disinformation. The Trump administration slammed the group for “censoring free speech” and imposing heavy-handed rules on American tech giants.

This bold move shatters any leftover goodwill between the US and its allies, deepening tensions already running high over defence, immigration, and tech regulation.

Europe Fumes: “Unjustified and Unprecedented” Attack

France, Germany, and Brussels erupted in outrage. The EU called the visa bans a hostile slap to its closest allies, demanding answers and warning of a swift “decisive response” if Washington doesn’t reverse course.

“Freedom of expression is a fundamental right in Europe and a core value shared with the US,” a European Commission spokesperson declared.

French President Emmanuel Macron threw his weight behind Thierry Breton, Europe’s top tech regulator. Macron tweeted, “We will not give up. We will protect Europe’s independence and freedom.”

Thierry Breton: Trump’s Target in the Tech Fight

Thierry Breton, who led the EU’s internal market from 2019 to 2024, masterminded the Digital Services Act. This law forces big tech to tackle illegal content such as hate speech and child abuse online. Trump’s team claims it unfairly targets US companies and muzzles free speech.

Breton has sparred publicly with Elon Musk, Tesla and X owner, who labelled him “the tyrant of Europe.” After the visa ban news broke, Breton fired back on X, “Is McCarthy’s witch hunt back?”

Who Else Got Banned?

  • Imran Ahmed, UK head of the US-based Center for Countering Digital Hate
  • Anna-Lena von Hodenberg and Josephine Ballon from German anti-hate group HateAid
  • Clare Melford, co-founder of the Global Disinformation Index

Germany’s justice ministry slammed the move as “unacceptable” and pledged full support for the activists. “Calling this censorship misrepresents our constitutional values,” it said. The UK echoed support, backing efforts to fight online harm while protecting free expression.

Outcry Over Alleged “Government Censorship”

A spokesperson from the Global Disinformation Index blasted the Trump administration for weaponising government power to “intimidate, censor, and silence voices they don’t like.” They called the bans “immoral, unlawful and un-American.”

Breton joins a number of French citizens hit by Trump-era sanctions, including Judge Nicolas Yann Guillou, targeted over ICC probes involving Israeli and US officials.

Transatlantic Ties on the Brink

This visa ban saga underscores deepening US distrust of Europe. Trump’s team paints the bloc as bureaucratic, weak, and censoring nationalist voices. A recent US National Security Strategy warned Europe faces “civilisational erasure” if it doesn’t toughen up and renew its US ties.

Earlier this year, Vice President JD Vance’s Munich speech rattled Europe, forcing a rethink on reliance for US military and tech support.

With Brussels, Paris, and Berlin pushing back hard, a new Cold War over digital dominance and free speech is ramping up across the Atlantic.
