Youth Justice U-Turn: Two boys’ jail terms slashed for savage Worthing dad attack
Boys’ Brutal Assault Sparks Outrage
In April 2021, Worthing father Alan Willson was left with life-changing injuries after a violent attack by two teenage brothers. George Tilley, 13, and Archie Tilley, 14, were convicted of grievous bodily harm with intent and given harsh 12-year sentences.
The original punishment included a maximum of nine years behind bars plus three years on extended licence, classifying the pair as dangerous offenders.
Appeal Slashes Sentences by Two and a Half Years
However, the Court of Appeal at the Royal Courts of Justice has now deemed these sentences “manifestly excessive.” The boys’ youth and immaturity were not fully factored in, judges ruled.
Their total terms dropped to nine and a half years. This breaks down to six and a half years in custody and three years on extended licence – a significant cut from the original sentence.
Judge Condemns Violence but Follows Legal Guidelines
Despite acknowledging the vicious, repeated nature of the assault and the devastating impact on Alan, the judge highlighted the absence of remorse shown by the boys. Still, sentencing must align with strict legal rules governing young offenders.
Detective Pledges Continued Support for Victim
“This was a truly horrific assault on a man whose life will never be the same,” said DCI Simon Dunn, Senior Investigating Officer.
“We were pleased the brothers were convicted last year and held responsible. Even with this reduction, they remain in custody until 2028.”
“We respect the court’s decision and continue to support Alan and his family through this difficult time.”
