Two Brothers Busted After Brazen Burglaries and Dangerous Getaway
Michael and John Wilson’s crime spree ended in cuffs after a wild raid and a reckless getaway that left locals fearing for their safety. The brothers from Calverton have now been locked up following a December 2019 burglary that left a community shaken.
Child’s Bike Stolen Amid Chaos
As they tried to escape, one brother stole a child’s bike before being caught, while the other sped off in a red van, terrorising nearby residents by crashing through front gardens and nearly hitting people on the pavement.
20 and 8 Months Behind Bars
Michael Wilson, 45, was sentenced to 20 months after pleading guilty to burglary and theft. His younger brother John, 36, got 8 months for burglary and dangerous driving. The pair’s crimes unfolded at a convenience store on Victoria Road, Netherfield, on the morning of 22 December 2019.
Burglaries and Bold Getaway
- The brothers broke in using bolt croppers to cut a padlock and smashed through a back door.
- They swiped £3,000 worth of cigarettes and failed to open the till — so they swiped the whole till with £250 inside.
- Stolen items also included bagged coins and scratch cards valued at £1,200.
- Security cameras captured their every move, triggering an alarm that alerted the store owner and police.
Witnesses Help Nail the Culprits
Several witnesses reported hearing the ruckus. One spotted a red van with a known registration plate near the shop. Later, police spotted the van and tried to stop it. John Wilson’s reckless driving saw him mount front gardens, hit the pavement, and force locals to scramble out of the way.
John jumped out, but was chased and caught. Michael was found later after an eyewitness saw him attempting to flee on a bike belonging to her son.
Searches of their Calverton home uncovered clothes with glass fragments and plastic bags matching those taken from the shop – strong forensic links that sealed their fate.
Detective Constable Caroline Bailey said: “The two Wilson brothers had no regard whatsoever for the victims or anyone who nearly got run over as they fled. It’s very lucky no one was hurt.
“Burglary is a deeply upsetting crime with long-lasting effects on victims and the wider community. Nottinghamshire Police takes this seriously and remains committed to tackling and reducing these offences and bringing criminals to justice.”
