Two former Sussex Police officers have been found guilty of breaching professional standards following separate accelerated misconduct hearings at Sussex Police HQ in Lewes on October 17.
Dishonest Officer Caught Out Over Secret Payments
PC Joseph Bryant, once stationed in Hastings, admitted helping out a relative’s business but denied taking payment. However, investigators uncovered payments through his phone records during a probe into his secondary employment.
He was found guilty of dishonesty, violating the force’s standards for honesty and integrity. Bryant had already resigned back in February but would have been axed if still serving.
Ex-PC X Tests Positive for Cocaine, Faces Career-Ending Verdict
Another ex-officer, known only as PC X, was tested on June 7 under the force’s substance misuse policy and found to have used cocaine, a class A drug. He was accused of being unfit for duty and discreditable conduct after presenting himself on the job while under the influence.
The Chief Constable ruled the allegations proven, stating PC X would have been dismissed if not for his retirement in August.
Chief Constable Issues Stark Warning
“I expect our officers to act with the utmost integrity, and in line with the force’s values, the Code of Ethics, and professional standards. The actions of these officers fell far short, and such behaviour has no place in Sussex Police,” said Chief Constable Shiner.
“I’m proud of the staff, officers, and volunteers who uphold our values. This poor conduct will never be tolerated and should not overshadow the hard work of others.”
Sussex Police continue cracking down on misconduct to maintain public trust.
