Two Men Jailed for Preying on Elderly Man in £1.1 Million Fraud
Two men have been locked up after scamming a vulnerable elderly man out of more than £1.1 million in a ruthless, calculated con spanning over a decade. John Paul O’Connor, 37, from Kent, and Tony Casey, 34, from Hertfordshire, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud at Kingston Crown Court and were each sentenced to eight years in prison.
Calculated Scam Targeted Elderly Victim
O’Connor and Casey orchestrated a complex scheme to groom their victim, manipulating him into handing over his home at a bargain basement price. The victim’s property, worth around £500,000, was sold for just £20,000 in 2008 to a relative of O’Connor. Casey then assumed the role of the victim’s “landlord” and later tried to sell the house for nearly £950,000 without the victim’s knowledge.
Police uncovered the fraud after spotting suspicious bank activity during an unrelated investigation into Casey’s finances in 2015. Large, unexplained cash withdrawals and odd transactions dated back to 2003, with neighbours reporting that Casey or his associates often accompanied the victim to the bank.
Police Unravel Years-Long Con After Victim’s Death
Detective Constable Siobhan Cowlin launched a full investigation after discovering the victim had died six weeks before she visited his home in 2016. Further digs revealed Casey was impersonating the victim’s relative, posing as his nephew or grandson to take control of his assets, including revoking a lease that allowed the victim to live in his own home.
The scam only came to light when a female family member sent the victim a Christmas card that was returned undelivered. She was shocked to find out about his death and that strangers had arranged his funeral and sold his house without telling the family.
Fraudsters Finally Face Justice
Both men were eventually charged with fraud by false representation—Casey in 2018 and O’Connor in 2019 after a painstaking four-year police probe.
DC Siobhan Cowlin said: “This was a truly horrible, calculated and predatory fraud investigation in which two men groomed and took full advantage of a vulnerable elderly man.
“Had it not been for a family member contacting the police, Casey and O’Connor might very well have gotten away with this crime.
“Although this investigation has taken years to complete, it was so worth it to see these two men behind bars. It would not have been possible without the continued dedication and hard work of the Met’s Financial Investigators.”
