Two West Midlands Farmers Jailed Over Shocking Animal Cruelty

Two West Midlands farmers have been slammed with tough sentences after a brutal investigation by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) uncovered horrific animal neglect and serious welfare breaches.

Horrific Conditions at Leonards Farm

The probe began in May 2020 when APHA inspectors, working with Staffordshire County Council’s Trading Standards Animal Health team, raided Leonards Farm at Biddulph Moor. The scene was grim: calves and livestock trapped in filthy pens, some lying dead amid the survivors. Animals were starving, thirsty, and left without dry bedding. Sick calves were left to suffer, while tagging rules were blatantly ignored.

Harsh Sentences for Farmers and Company

  • Charles Gibson, owner of Leonards Farm, got a 20-week jail sentence, suspended for 12 months, 200 hours community service, £4,000 fines, and a lifetime animal keeping ban.
  • Alison Bailey was handed a community order, 80 hours unpaid work, £1,000 in costs, £90 victim surcharge, plus the same lifetime ban.
  • Wheelton Farms Ltd, represented by Director Martin Wheelton, was fined a whopping £32,000 and saddled with £7,500 costs.

APHA Vows Zero Tolerance on Animal Cruelty

Aled Edwards, Head of England Field Delivery at APHA, stressed the agency’s commitment to cracking down on animal welfare breaches. “We take every allegation seriously and are glad the court handed down sentences that send a strong warning,” he said. Edwards praised teamwork between APHA and local authorities that made the case a success.

The UK prides itself on top-tier animal welfare laws. The APHA urges anyone spotting animal cruelty or neglect to report it immediately on 03000 200 301 or via email at [email protected]. Quick action can save innocent animals from suffering.
