Teen Trial Bike Thieves Nabbed in North Wiltshire Crackdown
Two 16-year-olds from Swindon were caught red-handed riding trial bikes without a licence or insurance near Barbury Castle. PC Sean Williams and Special PC Mark Kennedy, patrolling the North Wiltshire Ridgeway area, swooped on the youngsters and seized their bikes on the spot.
Rural Riders Causing Havoc
PC Sean Williams revealed the crackdown comes after numerous complaints from locals fed up with bike nuisances in the rural Ridgeway villages of Chiseldon and Wroughton.
“We are carrying out extra patrols in these rural areas to clamp down on these individuals.”
Off-Road Rules You Can’t Ignore
Riding trial bikes, mini-motos, quad bikes or similar off-road vehicles on public roads is illegal without the proper paperwork. Riders must follow strict rules, including:
- Valid MOT if vehicle is over three years old
- Full car licence or category B1 licence (issued before January 1997)
- Minimum third-party insurance
- Vehicle registration with the DVLA, including front and rear number plates for quad bikes
Only DVLA-registered and insured vehicles meeting these standards can be used on roads, pavements, and car parks — no exceptions for off-road models or underage riders.
Part of a Bigger Road Safety Blitz
The bike seizures are part of a wider road policing campaign to slash serious injuries and deaths on Wiltshire roads.
