Wakefield predator locked up for 12 years after raping teen

Awais Hamed’s 12-Year Sentence

A 30-year-old local man has been jailed for a dozen years after raping and sexually assaulting a teenage girl in Wakefield. Awais Hamed, from Watson Crescent, was found guilty at Grimsby Crown Court of rape and assault by penetration. The attacks happened in December 2022, after he plied the vulnerable girl with cocaine, heroin, and alcohol.

The victim was also handed money to buy more drugs, trapping her deeper in addiction and isolation.

Police Praise Victim’s Bravery

The Wakefield District Child Vulnerable to Exploitation Team (CVET) led the investigation. Detective Sergeant Kirsty Senior of West Yorkshire Police praised the teen’s courage:

“This young woman has shown extraordinary courage in coming forward and working with officers to bring her abuser to justice. Her bravery has helped secure a conviction and protected others from harm.”

Linked Offender Also Behind Bars

The case is part of a wider probe into the victim’s exploitation. In 2024, 47-year-old Nadeem Hussain was jailed for related offences, thanks to CVET’s work tackling child exploitation and protecting victims.

Life on the Sex Offenders’ Register

Alongside his prison term, Hamed has been slapped with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and faces lifelong registration as a sex offender. The Crown Prosecution Service reminds us that sexual crimes carry stiff penalties due to their devastating impact. Despite only 16% of assaults being reported, those that reach court see high conviction rates.

Public Outcry and Support

Social media users hailed the verdict online. One tweeted, “Justice served for this brave survivor. Predators must face consequences.”
