Christmas Crime Crackdown Returns to Gedling Shopping Hotspot
As festive shoppers flood the high street, Gedling is beefing up security with the relaunch of the popular Shopwatch scheme. Thanks to a hefty cash injection from national Safer Streets funding – secured by the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner – crime won’t be spoiling the seasonal fun this year.
Heavy Hitters on Patrol to Fight Retail and Vehicle Crime
The Gedling Operation Reacher team has launched targeted patrols at Victoria Retail Park throughout December. Their mission: tackle retail theft and vehicle crime head-on. Plus, extra high-visibility police presence will be covering both the retail hub and nearby Colwick Industrial Park, forming a tough partnership to keep shoppers and businesses safe.
Adding muscle to these efforts, Gedling Borough Council has hired two fresh Safer Streets wardens. Uniformed and eyes-and-ears on the ground, these wardens will patrol hotspots to boost public confidence and deter trouble.

“My Reacher team is out there targeting those intent on causing misery for shoppers, businesses, and residents,” said Inspector Mark Stanley, Gedling’s District Commander. “The Shopwatch scheme and new wardens add a vital safety net.”
“These initiatives wouldn’t be possible without the strong ties between partners. Thanks to our joint effort, we’re making shops and streets safer.”
“The Safer Streets funding also helps us install more CCTV and ANPR cameras, and provides burglary victims with free security devices like doorbell cameras and locks,” he added.
Police and Crime Commissioner Caroline Henry stressed the funding’s lasting impact beyond Christmas. “This package – from extra patrols to new lighting and security upgrades – ensures that Netherfield and Colwick are safer places all year round.”
£750,000 Boost Targets Gedling and Beyond
The £3 million Safer Streets pot has earmarked £750,000 for Nottinghamshire South areas including Netherfield, Colwick, Rushcliffe’s Trent Bridge, and Broxtowe’s Eastwood South.
Gedling Borough Council leader Councillor John Clarke MBE welcomed the support: “We’ve seen Shopwatch work wonders in Arnold. The extra wardens will tackle antisocial behaviour and help stop illegal car cruising at Colwick Industrial Estate.”
