Wedding Rebel Faces £10K Fine for Flouting Essex Covid Rules
Essex has handed down its first hefty £10,000 penalty for throwing a massive bash during lockdown. A 41-year-old man organised a wedding party in Margaretting with 80 guests – well over the legal limit of 15.
Police Shut Down Huge Wedding Bash
Officers swooped on Ariana Gardens, Ivy Barn Lane, on Sunday 11 October at around 4:15pm after tips flooded in about the large gathering. They found about 80 guests seated for a wedding dinner – a clear breach of Covid restrictions.
Every guest was told to leave immediately. Those who refused risked a fixed penalty notice. Luckily, all complied without fuss.
Organiser Pinpointed and Penalised
As police lingered, they hunted down the event organiser. A 41-year-old man was identified and reported for summons under the Coronavirus laws. Holding a gathering over 15 people carries the eye-watering £10,000 fine.
Police Warn Against Rule Breakers
“This wedding party was a blatant breach of current restrictions which only allow 15 people at weddings,” said Essex Police Assistant Chief Constable Andy Prophet.
“The rules exist to stop the virus spread and protect our communities. We’ve all missed special events over the last six months, but a selfish few risk health by flouting the law.
“While most of Essex pulls together, we won’t hesitate to crack down on reckless behaviour,” he added.
