Sheep Mauled in Alkham Valley Dog Attacks

Farmers in Alkham Valley Road are reeling after a scruffy grey dog, resembling a lurcher, sneaked into their fields and attacked sheep.

The first assault happened on the evening of Saturday, 4 December 2021, around 5.50pm. The farm owner spotted the dog among her sheep, shouted, and it fled towards Green Lane.

Heavy Toll on Local Flocks

  • Six sheep were found dead after the initial attack.
  • Four others were badly injured and remain under veterinary care.
  • The very next day, seven more sheep died on a neighbouring farm in Wolverton Hill, likely from an animal attack.
  • On the night of 6 December, the same Alkham Valley farm suffered another blow: two sheep killed and one seriously hurt.

Police Issue Stark Warning to Dog Owners

“We urge all dog walkers in the countryside to keep pets on leads around livestock,” said PC Dan Perry. “These attacks caused terrible injuries and loss for farmers. A dog that kills sheep often strikes again.”

“Most dog owners are responsible, but everyone must follow footpath signs and keep dogs under control. Secure your gardens and properties if you have dogs,” he added.

Sheep-Worrying Laws Explained

Under the Animals Act 1971, anyone protecting livestock has the legal right to kill or injure a dog suspected of ‘worrying’ animals without facing punishment.

Sheep-worrying includes attacking or chasing livestock, causing injury, suffering, or loss. It’s illegal to have dogs off-lead in fields containing sheep unless under close control.

Kent Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information about the grey dog. Call 01843 222289 quoting ref: 04-1449 (Alkham Valley Road) or 05-0416 (Wolverton Hill).
