Distracted Driver Jailed for Deadly Crash That Killed Elderly Couple

A 56-year-old woman has been locked up for nine years after causing a fatal head-on crash while using her mobile phone. Patricia Pringle was behind the wheel of a blue Volkswagen Golf when she swerved into the opposite lane, smashing into a silver Fiat Qubo on the A47 in Barrowden, Rutland, back in May 2022.

Retired Couple Killed Instantly in Shocking Collision

The victims were retired geologist Clive Jones OBE, 89, and his wife Elaine, 82, a former archaeologist. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Pringle suffered a broken arm and was taken to hospital.

Investigations uncovered that Pringle was distracted by a phone call at the time of the crash. A motorist following her reported seeing her holding a phone when the smash happened.

Guilty Plea and Long Driving Ban

Pringle, from Spinney Hill, Leicester, admitted two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and possessing cannabis. On Friday, Leicester Crown Court sentenced her to nine years behind bars. She faces a five-year driving ban on release and must pass an extended driving test before getting back on the road.

Family Pays Heartfelt Tribute to ‘Extraordinary’ Couple

“Our parents were extraordinary people. Every day was lived to the full,” said the Jones family. “They belonged to and led numerous groups and were loved and well known in their community of Uppingham. They had many friends from all walks of life.”

The couple’s remarkable life took them from Malaya in the 1960s, to Iran and Africa. Clive’s outstanding geology work earned him an OBE and recognition from the Malayan government.

“The shock, horror, and disbelief at their deaths remain with so many,” the family added. “Their remaining years were stolen from them and from us. We never got to say goodbye. We miss them every day.”

Police Warn: Phone Use Behind the Wheel Can Be Deadly

Detective Constable Emma Mitchell from Leicestershire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Pringle showed little remorse but has faced the consequences of her actions. No sentence can bring Clive and Elaine back, but we hope this brings closure for the family.”

She added: “There’s a reason using a mobile phone while driving can cost you points on your licence. This tragic case is a stark warning that such behaviour can have deadly results.”
