Woman Airlifted After Horror Crash in Freshwater
A woman driver suffered life-changing head injuries and was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital following a serious smash in Freshwater, Isle of Wight, tonight. Three others were rushed to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport after the collision on Brook Road Junction in the village of Chessell.
Rescue Teams Race to Scene
Emergency crews were called just after 5pm on Monday. Firefighters from Freshwater, Ryde, and Newport, along with the Newport Rescue Tender, battled to free the trapped woman. They used specialist cutting gear to remove the roof of her Toyota Yaris after she was trapped for around 30 minutes.
Chaos on the Roads
The crash happened where the B3401 meets the B3399, causing major disruption. A nearby homeowner said it sounded like a “bomb going off.” Police from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Armed Roads Policing Unit have launched an investigation into the circumstances behind the collision.
Road closures on Middle Road are in place and expected to last for hours as investigators carry out detailed scene and vehicle examinations. Drivers are urged to seek alternative routes.
Casualties Treated at Local Hospitals

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service confirmed the three hospitalisations and the airlift. The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service confirmed their role in freeing the trapped female driver.
