Man Jailed After XL Bulldog Kills Woman in Jaywick
Ashley Warren has been locked up following a shocking attack by his XL Bulldog that fatally mauled 68-year-old Esther Martin. The brutal attack happened just days after the UK introduced a ban on XL Bullies.
First Conviction Under New XL Bully Laws
Warren, 41, was found guilty in February 2024 after Essex Police launched a full investigation. Esther was trying to break up a fight between Warren’s puppies when his dog Bear and another XL Bully attacked her.
Esther had mobility issues and was inexperienced with the aggressive dogs. Warren left her alone with ten XL Bullies while he travelled to London — breaking dangerous dog laws demanding responsible supervision.
Jury Slams Warren for Illegal Ownership and Neglect
Detectives revealed Bear was massive and uncontrollable, with Warren struggling to manage the pack at his Hillman Avenue home. He also failed to get the legal exemption certificates required to own XL Bullies.
The jury ruled Esther was unable to care safely for the dogs and held Warren fully responsible for the fatal mauling.
Warren Jailed Over 10 Years and Banned from Dogs For Life
On Tuesday, 31 March, Warren, from Garfield Road, Addleston, was sentenced to 10 years and three months behind bars. He also received a lifetime ban on owning dogs. The sentence sends a clear warning about flouting the new dog laws.
Essex Police: “Our meticulous investigation has led to a landmark conviction under new legislation banning XL Bully ownership.
