Youth Justice Minister Visits Wiltshire Police to Praise Youth Crime Crackdown

Last week, Minister for Youth Justice Sir Nic Dakin visited Wiltshire Police to check out their groundbreaking work to keep youngsters away from crime and support at-risk youth. Wiltshire is one of the first forces to host the minister, led by Chief Constable Catherine Roper, who also heads the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s youth portfolio.

Impressive Results in Youth Crime Battle

  • Out of Court Solutions: Wiltshire’s use of alternative sentencing exploded from just 5 in 2018 to a whopping 851 in 2024.
  • Knife Crime Plummets: Swindon-focused youth engagement saw an 18.1% drop in knife crime, 25% fall in serious violence, and fewer robberies.
  • Missing Children Located Faster: High-risk kids are now found in under 12 hours, down from 24 in 2023/24.
  • Trust-Building Youth Activities: Football and climbing clubs plus a new Police Challenge Badge for Girl Guides and Scouts are bridging the gap between police and young people.

Chief Constable Calls for Collaborative Action

“I’m truly passionate about improving how policing serves children and young people,”

said Chief Constable Roper.

“Every child deserves the chance to thrive without their lives being wrecked by crime – whether as victims, offenders, or living in fearful communities.”

She credited the force’s success to strong partnerships with local agencies and community groups working together.

Minister Dakin Hails Wiltshire’s Youth Crime Progress

“Wiltshire Police is a shining example of how to engage young people, build trust, and slash youth crime,”

“Their success cutting knife crime and creating safer communities sets a high bar for the rest of the country.”

This high-profile visit highlights Wiltshire Police’s role as national trailblazers in youth crime prevention and community trust-building.

Ongoing Commitment to Youth and Community Safety

“We’re committed to deepening relationships and working with partners to make a real difference for young people in Wiltshire,”

Chief Constable Roper assured, signalling more bold steps ahead.

Wiltshire Police’s innovative youth justice efforts are setting the pace across the UK, offering a blueprint for safer streets and brighter futures.
