Lewes Bonfire Night 2024 Draws 40,000 Safely Despite Bigger Crowds
Sussex Police and emergency services have hailed Lewes Bonfire Night 2024 a huge success. With around 40,000 partygoers turning out—far more than last year—the event ran safely and smoothly, with most crowds clearing out by midnight on November 6.
Months of Planning Keeps Chaos at Bay
The iconic Lewes Bonfire celebrations, famed for their fiery traditions and intense festivities, demand months of prep. Sussex Police worked hand in hand with emergency services, local councils, transport operators, community groups, and bonfire societies to keep loyal revellers safe and sound.
Emergency Crews Busy But In Control
St John Ambulance and South East Coast Ambulance treated 46 people during the night, with just three needing hospital care. East Sussex Fire and Rescue tackled several minor bonfire-related fires:
- 7:57 PM: Torches found burning on the ground at Winterbourne Hollow, but firefighters stood down before arrival.
- 8:09 PM: A telegraph pole caught fire from torches and was quickly doused with foam and hoses.
- 8:41 PM: Smoke spotted from a lamp post led to a road closure as crews assessed the scene.
Four Arrests Made During Festivities
Sussex Police confirmed four arrests:
- A 15-year-old, initially held for possession of a knuckle duster, was later released.
- A 24-year-old and a 25-year-old were arrested on suspicion of common assault.
- One person was detained for drunken and disorderly behaviour.
All suspects remain in custody as inquiries continue.
Chief Superintendent Howard Hodges said: “We thank the public for their support to ensure the Lewes Bonfire celebrations were once again a spectacular event that has been enjoyed safely.”
