Early Morning Blaze Ravages Angel Inn Roof in North Street Fire
A fierce fire broke out around 1 a.m. Thursday in a North Street property, quickly spreading to the roof of the neighbouring Angel Inn. The blaze escalated into a major incident, forcing the evacuation of over 30 people, including children.
Ukrainian Refugees Among Those Evacuated
Local witness Hilton Holloway, who lives directly across the street, revealed there were many Ukrainian refugees staying at the hotel, which has only about 15 rooms. “I spoke with one young woman who appeared to be relatively calm,” he said.
Hilton captured dramatic photos and videos showing flames racing from the adjoining building to the Inn’s roof as firefighters rushed to contain the inferno.
Fire Crews Battle Blaze with Full Force
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Services declared the fire “significant.” Initially, ten fire engines, an aerial ladder platform, a water carrier, and an off-road vehicle responded. By 6 a.m., the incident escalated further, bringing 14 engines to the scene.
Area Manager Richard Abbot warned that North Street will remain closed for the foreseeable future and urged the public to avoid the area. “It is too early to determine the cause of the fire, but we will investigate as soon as it is safe,” he stated.
No Injuries Reported — Road Closures in Place
Sussex Police officers are managing the scene and warned that surrounding road closures remain active. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far as crews continue to battle the fire into the day.
