Tragic Harlow Fire: Dr Abdul Shakoor Remembers Family Lost a Decade Ago

Dr Abdul Shakoor’s world was shattered in 2012 when a devastating fire ripped through his Harlow home, killing his wife Dr Sabah Usmani, their three children – Hira, 12, Muneeb, 9, Rayyan, 6 – and leaving two more, Sohaib, 11, and Maheen, 3, to die later in hospital. Now, ten years on, Dr Shakoor returned from Pakistan to commemorate the family’s tragic deaths at a poignant memorial service held at the Harlow Islamic Centre.

Heartbreaking Memorial Service Marks 10 Years Since Fire

“It was absolutely necessary to mark their passing and reflect with the community who stood by us,” said Dr Shakoor. “My loving wife was my best friend. The children loved living here with a wonderful community.” Recalling that devastating night, he added: “It’s really difficult. I can’t forget what time of night it happened.”

Dr Shakoor credits his strong faith and community support for helping him survive the awful ordeal. Speaking ahead of the anniversary, he met police to discuss ongoing investigations. “I’m a firm believer in hope we will get answers,” he said, urging witnesses to come forward.

Police Still Hunting Clues – Case Far From Closed

Essex Police detective chief inspector Louise Metcalfe confirmed the inquiry remains active. “There are facts in this case that don’t add up,” she said. Investigators are chasing key leads:

  • A white man in his twenties was seen cycling away near the scene but has never come forward.
  • Dr Shakoor’s stolen laptop with a distinctive two-pin plug remains missing.
  • A mysterious note about the fire was found in a local Boots shop – police want to question the author.
  • An anonymous caller tipped off Essex Police days after the fire. Detectives want to identify who made the call.

“It’s unusual for burglars to set fire to a property. We are reviewing everything to turn over any stones that might give clues,” said DCI Metcalfe. “Even after all this time, any information could be crucial.”
