PCSO Butterworth Boosts Safety and Spirits of Thanet’s Elderly Veterans
PCSO Adrian Butterworth, a Crime Prevention Officer with the Thanet Community Safety Unit, is making waves by offering company and crucial safety advice to some of the district’s oldest residents. Every Thursday morning, you’ll find him at the Armed Forces Veterans’ Coffee Morning, organised by Age UK at Zion Place, Margate.
Bringing Veterans Back Into the Fold
“These veterans had been isolated through the pandemic,” says PCSO Butterworth. “For many, this is the only time in a week they get out of the house.” He was invited to join after giving a presentation at a similar event and now tries to attend whenever he can. The relaxed setting allows him to chat, share local updates, and warn about current scams targeting the elderly.
Fighting Crime Against the Vulnerable
As people age, they become prime targets for criminals. PCSO Butterworth explains: “Burglars use distraction tricks, fraudsters swipe bank cards, and scammers con large sums of cash. Often, these victims don’t have many chances to speak out.” His visits provide a vital lifeline, offering support and helping link vulnerable residents with the help they need.
A Veteran’s Touch Makes All the Difference
Butterworth served nine years with the Royal Artillery, and the coffee morning’s attendees hold a special place in his heart. “Many have faced war’s horrors and tough times. Their generation just gets on with it and rarely asks for help,” he says. “I hope my background encourages them to open up, even if their issues aren’t police-related. Sometimes, a nice cup of tea and a chat can change someone’s whole day.”
