Man Arrested as Police Hunt Clues in Deptford Woman’s Disappearance
Maureen Gitau, 24, vanished after leaving her home on Evelyn Street, Deptford, five days before she was reported missing on 10 December. Police now fear the worst, suspecting she has suffered serious harm.
54-Year-Old Man Held Over Suspicion of Murder
A 54-year-old man, believed to be known to Ms Gitau, was arrested on Friday on suspicion of her murder. Detectives are treating the case as a potential homicide despite no body being found.
“This arrest is a significant development in what is now being treated as a murder investigation,” said Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn.
“Whilst we have not located Maureen’s body, we have reason to believe she has come to serious harm and has likely been killed.”
Family in Shock as Police Urge Public to Come Forward
Maureen’s family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. They made an urgent appeal for information following her disappearance.
Police are urging anyone who saw Maureen in Deptford on 5 December, or anyone with relevant information, to call 101 immediately.
