Heroic Jimi Remembered with Memorial Plaque Near London Bridge
Folajimi “Jimi” Olubumni-Adewole, a brave former Harris Academy Peckham student, tragically died in April 2021. Yesterday, Living Bankside charity honoured him with a plaque in Cathedral Square, close to London Bridge — the very spot where he made the ultimate sacrifice.
Tragic Night After Work
Jimi and Joaquin Garcia were heading home after a shift at a central London restaurant when disaster struck. The pair fell into the Thames. While the coastguard and marine police managed to rescue Joaquin and a woman in trouble, Jimi was nowhere to be found.
His body was sadly recovered six hours later near London Bridge.
City Mourns Bermondsey’s Brave Son
“Jimi’s extraordinary act of bravery will not be forgotten,” said the Mayor of London during the plaque unveiling. “This plaque ensures the Bermondsey boy and hero remains etched forever in the heart of the city.”
“Jumping into the Thames to save a drowning woman was a heroic act that symbolises light and courage.”
The new memorial serves as a permanent reminder of Jimi’s selfless courage. London salutes the hero who gave everything for others and ensures his memory will live on.
