PC Ian McDonald has been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Police Medal (QPM) in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours, celebrating the Platinum Jubilee. The recognition crowns a sterling career dedicated to courage, skill, and saving lives.
From Rookie to Canine Unit Star
Ian kicked off his policing career with Northamptonshire Police in 2000. He quickly climbed the ranks, joining a proactive team by 2001 before becoming a certified detective in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
In 2006, Ian found his calling with the Dog Section. Today, he works alongside search and rescue dog Alfie and general purpose dog Mac, playing a vital role in training these expert canines to tackle emergencies head-on.
Life-Saving Bravery and Unshakable Dedication
“I was astonished to receive the call saying I’ve been granted the QPM but am honoured to be recognised,” said Ian. “It’s a pleasure to work with such a fantastic team of officers; I’m proud of what we do. I must also thank my wife and children for their unwavering support throughout my career.”
Chief Constable Nick Adderley praised Ian’s unwavering bravery and commitment: “Ian has never compromised on the highest standards for himself or his dogs. He’s been a lifesaver on multiple occasions – rescuing missing persons, pulling victims from burning cars, and aiding emergency efforts during a tragic nightclub crush.”
