Royal Navy Crushes £160 Million Drug Haul in Caribbean Blitz

The Royal Navy has made two major drug busts in the Caribbean, stopping £160 million worth of cocaine and amphetamines from hitting UK streets. A joint task force, including RFA Argus, Royal Marines, and allied forces, pulled off a series of daring operations that netted 1.7 tonnes of cocaine and 28kg of amphetamines.

High-Speed Helicopter Chase and Sniper Intervention

The action began when RFA Argus and Dutch Navy ship HNLMS Groningen spotted suspicious vessels. A Wildcat helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron, carrying Royal Marine snipers, used advanced sensors to track and halt the suspects. Royal Marines from 47 Commando, the US Coast Guard, and Dutch personnel then boarded the vessels to seize the drugs.

Just 48 hours later, routine training turned to high-stakes pursuit. A Merlin helicopter from RFA Argus spotted a suspicious craft. The 28,000-tonne ship changed course in a thrilling chase. Together, Merlin and Wildcat helicopters, HNLMS Groningen, and the US Coast Guard intercepted the vessel, uncovering more illegal drugs.

Top Brass Praise International Teamwork

Minister for the Armed Forces James Heappey: “The Armed Forces are committed to tackling organised crime, both at home and overseas, working with our allies globally to protect our people and interests.”

“The Royal Navy has once again demonstrated its professionalism and tactical skill in stopping illegal drug-smuggling. Thanks to their efforts, £160 million worth of drugs will never reach UK streets.”

Captain Kevin Rimell, Commanding Officer of RFA Argus: “This is another brilliant example of multi-national co-operation in the Caribbean.”

“I’m proud of the RFA Argus team and allied forces who took the lead in this operation alongside the US Coast Guard and Dutch Navy.”

Ongoing Mission to Protect UK Waters

The Royal Navy Caribbean task group has now prevented nearly £250 million worth of drugs from reaching the UK after three busts last month. RFA Argus and HMS Medway are deployed to support British Overseas Territories during hurricane season while maintaining maritime security and counter-narcotics patrols.

These operations work in tandem with the Joint Interagency Task Force South, based in Florida, which monitors criminal activity throughout the Caribbean to back up security efforts.
