Child Sexual Abuse Soars in England and Wales: Half of Offenders Under 18

Shocking Rise in Child Sex Abuse Cases

Police data reveals a disturbing rise in child sexual abuse across England and Wales. In 2022, a staggering 107,000 cases were reported — a 7.6% jump from the previous year and nearly four times higher than a decade ago. Even more worrying: over half of the offences were committed by children under 18, with 14-year-olds most frequently named as offenders.

Family and Online Abuse Drive Alarming Stats

The Vulnerability Knowledge and Practice Programme’s report uncovered grim details. One-third of abuse cases happened within families, while at least 32% involved online sexual abuse. The rise of abuse among under-18s has been fuelled by child-on-child incidents, making up 52% of cases in the 10 to 18 age group. These ranged from inappropriate behaviour to serious violent crimes, including rape.

Experts Warn of Growing Online Threats

Wendy Hart, deputy director for child sexual abuse at the National Crime Agency, sounded the alarm: “With over half the crimes involving child-on-child abuse, education is more vital than ever. Offending is getting worse and more complex. The rise of artificial intelligence worsens this, as hyper-realistic AI-generated images and videos spread online easily.”

Urgent Need for Action and Awareness

The report highlights that three-quarters of sexual abuse and exploitation cases directly target children. About one in four cases involve indecent images shared online. The surge in abuse goes hand in hand with the rapid growth of digital devices, underscoring the urgent need for robust safeguarding and awareness campaigns aimed at protecting vulnerable kids from online dangers.

Police forces are urged to step up vigilance and adapt to tackling these increasingly severe and complex crimes in the digital era before it’s too late.
