Man Dead After Multi-Car Crash on the A12 – Cops Hunt BMW Driver Who Fled

Detectives are hunting witnesses after a man died in a horrific multi-vehicle crash on the A12 in Leytonstone.

Tragic Death on Eastbound A12

The smash happened late on Wednesday, 24 January at 11:09pm on the eastbound A12 between Ruckholt Road and Whipps Cross. Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of a collision involving several cars.

A 73-year-old man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Police have informed his family and are awaiting formal identification and a post-mortem.

Chaos Unfolds After Initial Minor Crash

Investigators say the trouble began with a minor crash between two vehicles. Both drivers swapped details and left.

This caused queues, leading to a BMW speeding into four more vehicles. The BMW then slammed into the central reservation.

  • Vehicle 1: Porsche – Left before police arrived
  • Vehicle 2: Range Rover – Also left the scene early
  • Vehicle 3: Ford Mondeo – Stayed at the scene
  • Vehicle 4: Peugeot 206 – Remained with no injuries

The Ford driver pulled over to fix a wheel but fell ill and died despite efforts by emergency services. Passengers in the Peugeot escaped unscathed.

BMW Driver Vanishes – Police Issue Urgent Appeal

The white BMW X6 Coupe (registration OV6GYJ) fled the scene and remains at large.

“This was a very serious collision involving a number of vehicles, which has sadly resulted in a man losing his life,” said Detective Sergeant Jeff Edwards from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit. “We’re urging the driver of the BMW to come forward immediately. The other drivers involved have been traced and are helping with enquiries.”
