Justice Secretary Dominic Raab taps Raj Desai for key watchdog role on deaths in custody
New appointment to Independent Advisory Panel
The government has appointed Raj Desai as a Member of the Independent Advisory Panel on Deaths in Custody. The move was confirmed by the Deputy Prime Minister, Lord Chancellor, and Secretary of State for Justice, Rt Hon. Dominic Raab MP.
Three-year term to start soon
Desai will serve a three-year term beginning on 13 December. The panel oversees investigations into deaths in custody, covering prisons, police detention, and mental health facilities.
Expertise in human rights and prison law
Raj Desai brings a wealth of legal experience. He’s a co-author of textbooks on human rights law, public law, and prison law, and has lectured at the University of Oxford. He also advises the Equality and Human Rights Commission and sits on their Panel of Preferred Counsel, as well as the Attorney General’s Panel of Counsel.
