East Belfast Church Ravaged in Suspected Arson Attack
A church in East Belfast has been left battered after a suspected arson blaze tore through the building. Fire crews raced to the scene and doused the flames, but the damage was severe.
Serious Damage Reported
- Shutters completely destroyed
- Front hall severely damaged
- Smoke damage widespread throughout the interior
Witnesses say two suspects were seen running away on foot along Templemore Street right after the fire broke out. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is investigating the incident as a racially motivated hate crime and has launched an urgent appeal for information.
Police Hunt Suspects – Public Help Needed
Detective Inspector Smith said, “We are committed to bringing those responsible to justice and are asking anyone with information to come forward.”
The PSNI are especially keen to see:
- Doorbell camera footage from nearby properties
- Any CCTV recordings covering the area
- Dash-cam footage from passing vehicles

Arson on the Rise in East Belfast
This latest attack highlights growing worries about deliberate fires in East Belfast. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) reports a 15% spike in arson cases between February and July 2024 compared to last year.
There were 87 deliberate fires recorded during this period, up from 76 the previous year. Alarmingly, around 30% were serious enough to endanger lives.
Authorities are urging local residents to stay vigilant and report anything suspicious as investigations continue.
