Scam Alert: Fake Cops Target Kirklees Residents in Bold Courier Fraud
Scammers Posing as Police Officers
West Yorkshire Police have warned Kirklees locals to stay sharp amid a wave of scams. Fraudsters are pretending to be officers, calling victims to claim their bank details are compromised. Using fake badge and crime numbers, these con artists pressure victims into handing over cash, claiming it’s for a police investigation.
The Deceptive “Courier Fraud” Scheme
The scammers go the extra mile. They tell victims to hang up and dial 999—but stay on the line, tricking them into thinking they’re speaking with real cops. Then, the fake officers turn up in plain clothes to collect the money. The West Yorkshire Police Economic Crime Unit is probing two recent incidents from July in the Kirklees Rural area.
Suspect Description and Police Advice
One suspect is described as a slim man in his 20s, 5’6”, with an afro hairstyle and wearing a black jacket, red and white lanyard, dark trainers, and black tracksuit bottoms. Detective Sergeant Paul Hutchinson stressed real officers never ask for cash withdrawals, for victims to buy valuables, or disclose PINs.
Stay Safe: How to Spot the Fakes
- If you get a call from someone claiming to be police or bank staff, hang up immediately.
- Wait a few minutes before calling 101 or your bank directly from a different phone.
- Never let anyone pressure you into handing over money or personal details.
Anyone who’s been targeted or has info on these crimes should call West Yorkshire Police Economic Crime Unit on 101 or report online quoting crime number 13230421915.
