Captain Tom Foundation Hit by Charity Probe – Stops Taking Donations Amid Scandal
Charity Closes Donations as Probe Heats Up
The Captain Tom Foundation, set up to honour the late war hero Captain Sir Tom Moore, has slammed the brakes on donations. All payment channels are now closed while a serious investigation by the Charity Commission digs into the charity’s management and suspected family ties.
Controversy Clouds Captain Tom’s Legacy
Captain Sir Tom Moore, who inspired the nation by raising a staggering £39 million for NHS Charities Together with his garden walks in 2020, was knighted for his efforts before his death in February 2021. But the foundation carrying his name is now under a statutory inquiry over concerns about its independence and how it’s run.
Planning Permission Fiasco Adds Fuel to the Fire
The foundation’s troubles don’t end there. The Captain Tom Foundation’s own building – meant to sit on the property of Captain Tom’s daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, in Bedfordshire – was rejected by local planners. The unauthorised block featuring a spa pool received an enforcement notice demanding demolition. An appeal is underway.
Foundation Vows Full Cooperation
A foundation spokesperson said: “Our priority is cooperating fully with the Charity Commission’s inquiry.” They added that the charity won’t be asking for funds while the probe continues and that future decisions will depend on the inquiry’s outcome.
What Happens Next?
The Charity Commission launched its investigation shortly after Captain Tom’s death in 2021, escalating to a formal statutory inquiry in June. It has stayed quiet while the probe runs but promises the findings will clarify the charity’s management and its links to the family.
