Sadiq Khan Slams Chancellor’s “Anti-London” Autumn Statement
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has launched a fierce attack on Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s latest Autumn Statement, branding it “another deeply anti-London budget.” Khan slammed the government’s financial plan for shortchanging the capital on vital issues like transport, affordable housing, and police funding.
Mayor’s Big Funding Hopes Crushed
Khan had pushed hard for hefty boosts to Transport for London (TfL), the Metropolitan Police, and affordable housing projects. Instead, he says Hunt’s announcements “fell woefully short.” The Mayor underlined London’s key role in driving UK jobs and growth and criticised the statement for failing to support Londoners battling the crushing cost of living crisis.
“London deserves fair funding. This budget lets the capital down and misses a chance to invest in its future,” Khan declared.
Government Defends Autumn Statement Wins
The government hit back, calling the statement a blueprint for a “stronger and more resilient economy.” They highlighted plans to pump an extra £20 billion a year into business investment, create more jobs, and deliver tax cuts for 29 million workers – their biggest move since the 1980s.
London Tories, including Minister for London Greg Hands MP and Harrow East MP Bob Blackman, also cheered. They pointed to increased support for low-income renters, rises in working-age benefits, and protection for the Pensions Triple Lock and Pension Credit.
£1.2bn Funding Requests Snubbed – Criticism Grows
Khan lamented missing out on a £569 million capital injection for TfL, which would have funded network upgrades and new Piccadilly Line trains. His plea for £470 million to build homes on brownfield land and £159 million annually to back the National and International Capital City Grant for policing also fell flat.
Liberal Democrat mayoral hopeful Rob Blackie and Green Assembly Member Siân Berry echoed the disappointment, criticising the Chancellor for ignoring London’s housing crisis, public service strains, and the lack of investment to boost public sector productivity.
