Detectives Urgently Hunt Two Men After Brutal Sexual Assault on Southsea Common

Police are renewing their desperate bid for information following the horrific sexual attack on a 40-year-old woman on Southsea Common.

Attack Shakes Southsea

The victim was walking near the Pyramid Centre, close to the junction of South Parade and Jack Cockerill Way, on Monday 3 August at around 9.45pm when an unknown man launched the assault.

The woman suffered serious injuries in the attack, which has left the community on edge.

Two Suspects Now in Police Sights

Investigators have revealed the probe has grown more complex, now focusing on two male suspects rather than one. A 19-year-old man previously arrested has been cleared and will face no further action.

Detective Inspector Matt Gillooly said: “We understand these updates may cause anxiety, but rest assured, we’re pursuing several lines of enquiry to solve this case.”

Clues the Public Can Help With

  • The attack occurred on a busy, warm evening with many on the Common, the day the circus was setting up.
  • It was dark by 9.45pm, with the sun recently set.
  • Officers are searching for a white male with facial hair, wearing a dark baseball cap, zipped dark top, and a blue surgical face mask.
  • They want to find anyone seen with this man or acting suspiciously, possibly near shrubbery.
  • Anyone driving on Clarence Esplanade, Jack Cockerill Way, South Parade, or Clarence Parade between 9.30pm and 11.30pm with dashcam footage is urged to come forward.

Stay Safe, Stay Alert

Extra patrols continue across Southsea Common and nearby areas. Officers encourage anyone with concerns to approach them. Det Insp Gillooly urged: “Please remain vigilant, avoid walking alone in the dark, stick to well-lit, busy areas, and look out for each other.”
