Man Murdered in London Park in Suspected Homophobic Attack
Ranjith Kankanamalage, 50, known as ‘Roy’, was brutally attacked and killed in a park on Monday, 16 August. The Met’s Specialist Crime Command has launched a murder probe, treating the case as a homophobic hate crime.
Police Hunt Key Witnesses in Park Murder
Detectives are appealing to the public for help. Thanks to community tips, a number of leads have been followed, but crucial witnesses are still missing. Officers have released images of two men seen near the cemetery where the attack happened. They could hold vital information for the investigation.
- First man: Medium build, short light-coloured hair, dark t-shirt, light blue shorts, dark brown trainers, carrying a black backpack.
- Second man: Medium build, short dark hair, wearing a dark jacket and dark trousers.
Police and Community Leaders Urge Witnesses to Speak Out
Detective Superintendent Pete Wallis said: “We understand people may be reluctant to come forward given the nature of this murder. But we urge anyone with information, no matter how small, to contact police or our LGBT+ partners. We especially want to hear from the two men in the images. All info will be treated with the utmost sensitivity.”
Derek Lee from the Met’s LGBT+ Advisory Group added: “This horrendous crime has caused major concern in Tower Hamlets and across London’s LGBTQ+ community. We’re working with police to keep parks safe and offer reassurance. Everyone should stay vigilant, especially when out late.”
Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, said: “We are deeply saddened by Roy’s senseless murder. Anyone with information must come forward to help protect residents and the LGBT+ community. Tower Hamlets is a No Place for Hate borough — we celebrate our diversity and will not tolerate hate crimes.”
