Deadly Drone Strike Rocks Sudan Market
A brutal drone attack has ripped through a bustling open market on Khartoum’s southern outskirts, killing at least 40 people. The horrific strike occurred amid fierce fighting between Sudan’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) scrambling for control.
Mass Casualties and Devastation
Bashair University Hospital sources confirm about 70 injured were rushed in from the Mayo neighbourhood attack last Sunday. Many victims face the nightmare of amputations due to grievous injuries. Disturbing social media footage shows bodies covered in white sheets laid out in the hospital yard, painting a grim picture of the carnage.
“The drone attack, blamed on the Sudanese army, has left the medical system overwhelmed,” said Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan reporting live from Khartoum.
Ongoing Conflict Tears Khartoum Apart
Since mid-April, Sudan’s capital and surrounding areas have been transformed into a warzone. RSF forces have seized civilian homes as military bases, while the army retaliates with airstrikes indiscriminately bombing residential districts.
The battle has forced over 7 million people to flee their homes, with 1.1 million seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. UN data suggests the death toll exceeds 4,000, though activists warn the true number is far higher.
Peace Still a Distant Dream
Despite nearly five months of bloodshed, no formal peace talks have begun. General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan of the Sudanese army has expressed cautious openness to diplomatic efforts like the Jeddah Forum but warns against meddling he considers “unacceptable.”
The ongoing violence in the western Darfur region adds a brutal ethnic dimension, with attacks on African groups by RSF and allied militias worsening the humanitarian crisis.
The Sudanese people remain trapped amid relentless shelling, drone strikes, and no ceasefire in sight.
