Hit-and-Run Killer Jailed for Mowing Down Pedestrian Buying Funeral Groceries
A reckless driver who ploughed into and killed a man buying groceries for a friend’s funeral has been locked up for causing death by dangerous driving.
Newly Qualified Driver Mows Down Pedestrian
Mohammed Muttaqabbir Miah, 26, from Camden, was sentenced to five years in prison at Harrow Crown Court on Thursday, 9 January. He was also banned from driving for four years.
Miah had been convicted of causing death by dangerous driving, dangerous driving, and failing to stop after the crash in December 2019.
The horrifying smash happened just two weeks after Miah had passed his driving test.
Tragic Details of the Fatal Crash
The collision occurred on 29 September 2018 at around 12:40pm on Quex Road, NW6, when Miah mounted the pavement and struck 60-year-old Diah Hamed Al-Safar.
Emergency services including London Ambulance and Air Ambulance rushed to the scene. Al-Safar was critically injured and later died in hospital.
Miah fled the scene but was caught nearby. Initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, an investigation revealed the crash was not deliberate. He was charged in May 2019.
Family’s Heartbreaking Tribute
“Since that horrendous and inhumane act in September 2018, our lives have been filled with sadness and misery,” said Mr Al-Safar’s son, Ben Casey. “Our father was the foundation of our lives, caring for his disabled wife and raising three children, the youngest only eight at the time.
“He was buying groceries to help with funeral arrangements for a friend’s brother—just one day after his friend’s passing. Ironically, that same friend attended his funeral less than a week later.
“Our father was an honest, hardworking man adored by family and friends. The man who brought joy to our lives has gone, leaving us robbed of future happiness. We want to remember him not for those final tragic days, but for the unconditional love he showed us.”
Police Warn New Drivers: Drive Responsibly or Face Jail
Detective Constable Sid Acharya from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Miah’s dangerous driving led to the death of Mr Al-Safar. He had only passed his test two weeks prior and was driving over the 20mph limit.
“This sentence should send a strong message to all drivers, new and experienced: you must drive competently and responsibly. Failing to do so can end in tragedy and prison.”
