Urgent Allergy Alert: Mustard Products May Contain Peanuts

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) have issued an urgent warning for anyone with peanut allergies. They must avoid all foods containing mustard, including mustard seeds, powder, and flour. This follows reports of peanut contamination in mustard products sourced from three Indian suppliers.

Contaminated Mustard Hits UK Markets

The affected mustard ingredients have reached UK spice companies, including FGS Ingredients Ltd, which supply manufacturers, retailers, and hospitality businesses across the country. These firms are now scrambling to check their stock and recall any contaminated goods. The FSA has already recorded 66 product recalls since the alert was issued on September 20, with more expected soon.

What You Need to Do

“This investigation is complex,” said Rebecca Sudworth, FSA Policy Director. “We are working closely with businesses and authorities to protect consumers. Those with peanut allergies should stay clear of all mustard products until the contaminated batches are fully identified and removed.”

  • Check all food labels carefully.
  • Ask about ingredients when eating out or ordering takeaway.
  • Report any allergic reactions linked to these products to the supplier and local authority.
  • Sign up for FSA allergy alerts to stay updated.

Safety First—But Food Choices Limited

While this advisory may restrict options for allergy sufferers, the FSA insists consumer safety takes priority. Businesses must act fast to identify and recall affected products. The investigation is ongoing both in the UK and India to find out how peanuts contaminated mustard supplies in the first place.

Consumers are urged to avoid mustard items until further notice and regularly check the FSA website for updates on this developing food safety issue.
