Mass Brawl Shuts Down Essex Road in Islington
A huge fight erupted outside Wenlock and Essex late on Saturday, forcing police to lock down a large stretch of Essex Road in North London’s Islington. Up to 40 people were involved in the chaos that spilled into the street.
Door Staff Unable to Control Rampage
Staff at the popular local bar and restaurant tried to calm the situation but failed as the row escalated quickly out of control. Several people were hurt, though it’s not clear if weapons or knives were involved or how serious the injuries are.
Scene Like a Wrestling Ring, Says Neighbour
“It was like a scene out of a wrestling ring,” said a stunned shop owner next door. “A big group started attacking each other. We closed the doors and shutters as they tried to barge in and smash bottles.”
Police Lockdown and Investigation Underway
The police have cordoned off Essex Road at the junctions with St Peters Street and Gasking Street. A heavy police presence was on scene to gain control.
Wenlock and Essex markets itself as a lively party bar with DJs and retro club nights, but Saturday’s violence has left locals reeling. The Met Police have been contacted for comment.
