Life-changing crash near Rotherhithe Tunnel shuts Commercial Road for hours
Serious Collision Rocks Limehouse at Night
A horrific road traffic collision ripped through Commercial Road near the Rotherhithe Tunnel at 10:15pm on 3 April 2025. A man in his 30s was hit by a car and is now fighting for his life in hospital.
The crash caused chaos with Commercial Road blocked both ways, bringing traffic to a standstill and leaving commuters stranded well into the early hours.
Man, 19, Arrested After Pedestrian Hit
Police swooped on the scene shortly after the crash. The driver, a 19-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said:
“Police were called to a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Commercial Road, Limehouse at 9:47pm on Thursday, 3 April.
The pedestrian, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital where he remains in a life-threatening condition.
The driver, a 19-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He remains in custody.
Commercial Road was closed in both directions for recovery and investigation. It was reopened around 8am on Friday, 4 April.

Traffic Nightmare: Bus Routes Disrupted
The crash shut down Commercial Road completely, causing major disruption to bus routes and other local transport.
Bus services affected include:
- 15, 115, 135, D3
- N15, N550, N551 night buses
Transport for London (TfL) urged commuters to find alternative routes and brace for delays. Drivers are warned to avoid the area if possible.
Police Launch Full Investigation, Call for Witnesses
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit is probing the cause of the crash. So far, details remain unclear.
