Fire crews raced to Astoria club on Guildhall Walk, Portsmouth, during its biggest night. Five fire teams from Portsmouth, Southsea, and Southampton battled a serious blaze that erupted in the early hours of Wednesday.
Fire Rips Through Ceiling, Spreads to Roof
Crews described the fire as “very serious,” with flames starting in the ceiling and swiftly spreading to the roof void. Firefighters spent over two hours tackling the inferno using hose reels and jets. Several firefighters had to enter the building to contain the blaze.
Hundreds Evacuated, No Injuries Reported
Just moments before the fire took hold, hundreds of clubbers were safely evacuated by vigilant staff. There were no injuries. Club bosses praised the door staff, management, and police for their quick and calm response during the evacuation.
Cause Under Investigation – Sparks from Performer Suspected
The fire’s cause is still being probed. Early reports suggest sparks from a performer using a disc cutter on the first floor may have ignited the ceiling. Fire crews from Southsea, Cosham, Portchester, and St Mary joined in the firefighting efforts.
