First Inmates Locked Up at New £2.3bn HMP Millsike
The first prisoners have been locked up at HMP Millsike, a spanking new Category C resettlement prison in Yorkshire. This state-of-the-art jail aims to slash crime and stop reoffending as part of the Government’s long-term Plan for Change.
Announced today by the Ministry of Justice, HMP Millsike is the first of four new prisons set to open as part of a pledge to add 14,000 extra 123. It will force offenders to turn their backs on crime, delivering safer streets and ensuring there are fewer victims in the future,” said James Timpson, Minister for Prisons, Probation and Reducing Reoffending.
The prison will be operated by Mitie Care and Custody, with workplace training and education provided by PeoplePlus.
Top-Notch Security to Stop Smugglers
HMP Millsike boasts cutting-edge security, including barless reinforced windows to foil drone contraband drops, X-ray body scanners, and hundreds of CCTV 123 launched last December, which plans to deliver:
- 6,400 places via new houseblocks
- 6,500 places through brand-new prisons
- 1,000 rapid deployment cells
- 1,000 refurbished existing cells
The strategy aims to modernise the prison estate and make sure there’s enough capacity to house serious offenders properly, keeping communities safer across the UK. It also follows recommendations from the Independent Sentencing Review, marking a bold move in criminal justice reform.
