Ex-Resto Boss Banned for 12 Years Over Covid Cash Scam

A former Staffordshire restaurant owner has been slapped with a 12-year ban from running any company after pocketing nearly £50,000 in bogus Covid-19 relief funds.

Belal Ahmed Caught Faking Claims

Belal Ahmed, 59, from Smethwick, exploited two government schemes in 2020. He abused the Eat Out to Help Out Scheme and the Bounce Back Loan Scheme through his business, Bengal Tandoori Lichfield Limited, claiming way more cash than he was owed.

The Insolvency Service exposed Ahmed’s dodgy tactics. He made false statements to snag government support aimed at businesses hit hard by the pandemic restrictions.

Serious Consequences for Covid Fraud

Ahmed inflated his claims for the Eat Out to Help Out discounts and exaggerated his financial need to grab a bigger Bounce Back loan. After a thorough probe, officials ruled his actions serious enough to disqualify him from director duties for over a decade.

“This case serves as a reminder that those who seek to exploit government support schemes for personal gain will face significant consequences,” said an Insolvency Service spokesperson. “Fraudulent activity undermines the integrity of these schemes and deprives genuine businesses of much-needed support.”

Warning to Businesses: Play Fair or Pay the Price

Ahmed’s restaurant has now closed, and authorities have ramped up warnings to businesses. They must ensure all claims for support funds are above board or face tough investigations and penalties.

The crackdown shows the government’s firm stance against fraud during the pandemic’s economic relief efforts, protecting taxpayers and honest firms alike.
